BOHDAN BUTENKO was born on the 8th of February 1931 in Bydgoszcz. In 1939 he moved to Warsaw where he lives today.
Studied at the Warsaw PWSSP, then at the graphic design faculty at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Made his diploma in 1955 at the studio of Jan Marcin Szancer of book design and illustration, illustrating Mikołaj Leskow's book Opowieść o tulskim mańkucie i stalowej pchle. After graduating became art director of a publishing house Nasza Księgarnia, where he worked for ten years.
He is mainly known as illustrator of more than 200 books, polish and foreign, and as author of his own books. He contributed to illustrated childrens' magazines such as Płomyk, Świerszczyk, Płomyczek, Miś. He illustrated many books for children such as Gapiszon w tarapatch, Miśka na tropie, Kwapiszon, to mention just a few.
He also produced animated films and designed many posters.
