about the exhibition

SATYRYKON – Legnica 2022

The SATYRYKON 2022 International Exhibition is a competition open to all authors, who may submit their drawings, prints, photographs, sculptures, and other fine art works.

For this year’s 45th edition of the SATYRYKON, 2500 entries have been sent in by 764 artists from 65 countries worldwide. 188 of these works have qualified for the exhibition that sums up the competition. Works have been assessed in two categories: JOKE and SATIRE, as well as this year’s selected topic: SCHOOL.

Established in 1977, the competition was initiated by Andrzej Tomiałojć and Robert Szecówka. Originally a local event, it transformed already in 1978 into the Nationwide Cartoon Exhibition. Over the years that followed, the competition’s formula was enriched and extended.

It officially became an international competition in 1985, and since then close contacts have been established with numerous foreign artists, art critics, and festival organisers. At present, the SATYRYKON is organised by Legnica Culture Centre jointly with Satyrykon Social and Cultural Foundation.

about Satyrykon

Satyrykon is an open competition for cartoonists, graphic artists, painters, sculptors, poster artists and photographers, organised by the Legnica Cultural Centre together with the Satyrykon Cultural and Social Foundation.

Its initiators in 1977 were Andrzej Tomiałojć from Legnica and Robert Szecówka from Wrocław. Initially, Satyrykon was a local exhibition of drawings by the Wrocław community, but in 1978 it was transformed into a nationwide competition exhibition of satirical drawings.

Legnica was the first and for many years the only meeting place for Polish satirists, and Satyrykon itself effectively contributed to the popularisation of satirical drawing in Poland. In the following years Satyrykon enriched its programme and broadened its formula.

In 1980 the International Photographic Exhibition, Fotożart, was organised for the first time, and works submitted to the satirical drawing competition were judged in two categories: Satire and Joke. Both exhibitions shared the Grand Prix of Satyrykon.

In 1985 the All-Polish Exhibition of Satirical Drawing officially became an international competition. At that time close contacts were established with many artists, art critics and festival organisers from abroad. Every year thousands of works by several hundred authors from dozens of countries all over the world are submitted to the Satyrykon.

Satyrykon Needles (Szpila Satyrykonu)
Szpila Satyrykonu 2022

During the opening of the exhibition – on 15 September 2022 – the Satyrykon Needles (Szpila Satyrykonu) award will be presented, for the tenth time, rewarding unruly and inspiring personalities. The awards have been presented since 2013. Previous recipients of the Pin include: Maria Peszek, Joanna Kołaczkowska, Maria Czubaszek, Wojciech Młynarski, Maciej Stuhr, Stanisław Tym, Henryk Sawka, Wojciech Mann, Piotr Bukartyk, Andrzej Poniedzielski or the "Szkła Kontaktowe" team.

The pins are awarded for an open mind, sense of humour, distance to oneself and the surrounding world, for activities that move the social intellect and for going against the tide of façade correctness and dubious normality.

The selection of the winners is made by the annually changing Satyrykon Pins Comitee, representing the Polish opinion-forming community. This year, the comitee included Katarzyna Kasia, Beata Tadla, Henryk Sawka, Mateusz Różański and Grzegorz Szczepaniak.
